Cheyenne
Scouts
Indians
were sharply aware of what was going on around them. Scouts
were always on the watch for unfriendly bands from other
tribes and later for the white man. But they were also
paying attention to what was happening with nature, where
food might be plentiful or scarce, and where water could
be found. If changes in the weather were noted, a camp
might have to be moved, or supplies stocked up.
This
painting depicts a group of Cheyenne warriors along the
American River as it dips into northern Oklahoma. These
scouts are armed and prepared for any danger, should it
be encountered. Protecting and caring for the safety of
their people was the purpose, and they did it well.

Warrior
Memories
In
the history of the Indians, warriors fought in battles
and achieved honors with insight and vision, and a desire
to see their sons walk proud. They recorded these events
on skins with great detail.
The
painted skin behind this warrior depicts a battle between
the Mandan Indians and enemy tribesmen about 1800. Without
this record by a man who saw the future need of the past,
this battle, won or lost, would have gone untold, forgotten.
But a warrior remembers, and in remembering relives his
glory and honor with great pride.
